Dr. Jia-Xin Qiu obtained his M.D. at Shanghai Second Medical College (Now known as Medical College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University) in Shanghai in 1960. In the same year, he was recruited into Longhua Hospital, affiliated to Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine College (Now known as Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine), as a physician at Oncology Department. In 1980’s Dr. Qiu continued his works in Yokohama University and Kanagawa Cancer Center in Japan and Oxford University in UK for the international cooperation of clinical and experimental research in TCM treatment to malignant tumors of digestive system. Since 1990, he has been a professor and director of Oncology Department in Longhua Hospital. One after another, he has been the vice chairman on Shanghai Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Committee of Oncology and director on China Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Association, deputy director of Shanghai Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine in 1990’s.
Dr. Qiu was the first few physicians in China to apply the principle of “Tonifying Spleen” to treat gastric cancer and promote the clinical trial. His major contribution is to put forward the judgment that “the Spleen Deficiency is the main cause of digestive system cancers which exists the whole process of the diseases. He has established the treatment system about “Tonifying Spleen and Nourishing Qi” combined with “Eliminating Heat and Toxin”, “Softening the Mass”, “Solving the Blood Stagnation” and “Tonifying Kidney”. Dr. Qiu has confirmed the principles by the experimental research about the TCM effect in anti-mutation and anti-initiation modes.
In clinical trial, Dr. Qiu has applied TCM and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine to treat malignant tumors in the digestive system and identified the advantages of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine in treating the precancerous lesions, decreasing the rates of recurrence and metastasis of post-operative patients, partly inhibiting the progression of tumor, increasing the overall survival and quality of life. Based on the results and experiences of clinical and research, he has created some kinds of new TCM medication which have definite clinical effects and partly defined mechanism. For example, the Wei Chang An and Yi Qi Jie Du Recipe, have been largely prescribed in clinic.
Because of his distinguished works, Dr. Qiu has received many awards and research funds from National and Shanghai Municipal Government, including National Science and Technology Subjects and awards. At present, application of TCM and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine in Oncology Department has become one of the characteristics of Longhua Hospital and promoted the Oncology Department of Longhua Hospital as the one of the first batch of National TCM Tumor Centers and one of Shanghai Clinical Medical Centers.
