Dr. Kunwei Shen is Professor of Surgical Oncology and Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology, and currently serves as Executive Director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center (CBHC), Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China. Dr. Shen also serves as the Standing Committee Member of Breast Cancer Society, Chinese Anti-cancer Association, and the Deputy Director of Shanghai Committee of Breast Cancer Prevention and Treatment Society. Prior to Ruijing Hospital, Dr. Shen was Deputy Director of Department of Breast Surgery/ Institute of Breast Cancer, Shanghai Cancer Center, Fudan University, Shanghai from 2000 to 2009. Previously, he held senior clinical and academic positions as Attending Doctor, Chief Doctor, Associate Professor and Professor at Cancer Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai.
Dr. Shen obtained his medical degree at Shanghai Medical College (Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University) in 1987 and received his further residency training and a surgical oncology fellowship at Shanghai Cancer Hospital from 1987-1994. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Surgical Oncology from Graduate School, Shanghai Medical College in 1994. In 1999, he was awarded an International Union Against Cancer Fellowship to study sentinel lymph node biopsy as a visiting scholar at Revlon/UCLA Breast Center, USA.
Dr. Shen has focused much of his clinical and research efforts in the areas of breast cancer. Dr. Shen’s research focuses on breast cancer early detection, tailored treatment, and comprehensive care. As Professor of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Shen plays the role of teacher, supervisor and/or mentor for post-doctoral fellows, residents, research trainees, graduate, and medical students. By far, he has been the supervisor for a large number of current Ph.D. and master’s students and recent graduates including 3 doctoral students and 9 master’s students. Dr. Shen has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals including 30 invited review articles. He contributes to 3 books and 13 book chapters as Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor, including “Contemporary Oncology of the Breast”, “Breast Diseases” and “Surgery of the Breast”. Dr. Shen has received a number of academic awards at the provincial and state level, including First Prize of Ministry of Health, Scientific and Technological Achievements (1997), Second Prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress (1998, 2001) and Third Prize of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau of Clinical Achievements (1999, 2001 and 2006).
Dr. Shen participates also as members of several journal editorials and advisory boards such as the Journal of Chinese Modern Surgery, Chinese Journal of Surgery, Chinese Journal of Cancer, and Journal of Surgery: Concepts and Practice. He has been a keynote speaker at lots of conferences in China and was invited an oral presentation at the 23rd San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December 2000, which was recognized as the top academic conference in breast cancer research and treatment.
